During a recent visit with my daughter and granddaughters, my husband asked if we would be interested in riding a train. Of course, we were all excited, especially when we learned the railway he had in mind was historical. In 1978, it was registered on the National Register of Historic Places.

Come on now. To touch a piece of history and share that with our kids… you all know I’m in!

We ended up riding the Fenelon Place Elevator, which is also known as the Fourth Street Elevator in DubuqueIowa. It was not what any of us expected, being a funicular railway, but it was still incredibly cool. Cramped, we were glad it went fast in the summer heat; blissfully living up to it’s title as “the World’s Shortest and Steepest Railroad.”

If you are ever in the area, you definitely want to heck it out. The views are gorgeous and definitely worth while!
