Today is about understanding Autism. It is meant to help us drop the negative labels and to better understand how to educate, communicate, and incorporate people with these unique conditions/disorders into our lives. What was once known as Classic Autism and Aspberger’s Syndrome is now simply  Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) or Autism Spectrum Condition (ASC).

Many youths are misunderstood, being labeled “bad kids” because of behaviors that are actually due to ASC and ASD that has not yet been diagnosed. Early detection not only protects our kids from being bullied by adults and peers, but it ensures they get the extra help they require. Being aware of what the signs are can help kids to learn at a younger age to manage their conditions, lessening frustration, reducing fears, and increasing inclusion.

“Asperger’s is no longer a standalone diagnosis, but it’s important to understand the difference between an autism diagnosis and an historical Asperger’s diagnosis. Learning the difference between autism and Asperger’s can impact how families approach treatment.”
