Did you know that January is National Hobby month? Neither did I. Looking for a new hobby is an exciting thing to do. Sadly, I daren’t. I am one of those people who likes to try everything.
I remember being in school and the teacher asked us to make a list of our hobbies. I sat there perplexed because I didn’t have one. In the end I just wrote that. But I did. I just didn’t recognise them as hobbies.
Reading was probably my first. I loved stories and The Famous Five were my favourite by Enid Blyton. I can still remember the pleasure of getting a new paperback and the excitement I felt opening Chapter One and have the words staring back at me ready to go. I was going on an adventure with Julian, Dick, George, Ann, and Timmy the dog.
When I had finished all the books, I whilst staying with my grandparents, got out my typewriter. My Grandad, a newspaper editor, asked me what I was writing. I told him I was going to write a new Famous Five book. You can’t do that, he said, it’s not allowed. Only Enid Blyton can write them. So I didn’t even attempt it. What a shame, my effort would have been no competition to her, and it would never have gone anywhere, anyway. It would just have been a fun thing to do. Now I look back, how odd that he took seriously to stop me.
My other hobby was writing. I was always writing short stories, when I grew up, right up, I became a published author. I then became a blogger, and I love doing them them both.
I mentioned I like to do a bit of everything, so my hobbies are cross stitching, crocheting, and drawing. In that past I have tried dressing-making, sewing, knitting, yoga, swimming, hiking, card making, and I’m sure there are probably more.
So what about you? What hobbies do you enjoy doing.

I love the old original cover and more information is on Enid Blyton’s website.
