Lois Lowry is an American author born in 1937. She has written over thirty novels that range in genre. She has readers of all ages, though her primary audience is elementary school-aged children to young adults. Lois describes her writing on her website: ” My books have varied in content and style. Yet it seems that all of them deal, essentially, with the same general theme: the importance of human connections.”
Raised in a military family and marrying a career military man, Lois Lowry traveled extensively in her life. An avid reader, she decided she wanted to be a writer as a shy and introvert youth. Her parents were very supportive, buying her a typewriter when she was thirteen. Her first novel, A Summer to Die, was published in 1977.
Lois Lowry received many awards for her work. She won two Newbery Medals – one in 1990 for Number the Stars and one for The Giver in 1994. For her outstanding contributions in children’s literature, she was a 2004 nominee as well as a finalist in 2000 and 2016 for the Hans Christian Andersen Award. Among other accolades, Lois Lowry also received Margaret Edwards Award in 2007.
