Born Marguerite Annie Johnson Angelou, this amazing woman has changed the world and influenced me, personally. Her words have touched my soul for as long as I can recall. Her beautiful spirit lives on, shaping our world even though she has transcended.
Maya Angelou is an empowered American woman. Best known for her writing, she was a poet, essayist, songwriter, playwright, and autobiographer. Her talents didn’t stop there. Maya was the first black female director in Hollywood. in addition to acting, singing, and dancing, she also wrote, produced and directed for film, television, and stage.
Maya was more than just an award-winning artist. This lady worked as an activist along side Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. and Malcolm X during the Civil Rights Movement. She served on the presidential committees for Gerald Ford (1975) and Jimmy Carter (1977). In 2000, President Bill Clinton gave her the National Medal of Arts and in 2010 she received the Presidential Medal of Freedom from President Barack Obama!
